Kaali Khuhi Review :

Terrie Samundra's film delivers a potent and moving social message while also being a satisfying horror thriller.

What if the murdered could exact their revenge on their victimizers? What havoc would be unleashed then? Terrie Samundra’s deeply unsettling and eerie film focuses on the evil social practice of female infanticide. Starring Shabana Azmi, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Riva Arora and Satyadeep Misra, the horror film is available on Netflix.

There are a few plot holes and moments where knowledge about totems and esoteric practices is assumed. The performances too are a bit uneven and one is left with a few loose threads as the explanation comes in dribs and drabs. However, the make-up, production design and cinematography with a subdued colour palette create a chilling ambience.

As this is a Netflix offering and all of us will be watching it on a relatively small computer or television screen, one cannot help but bemoan not being able to watch this film on the big screen.

Kaali Khuhi delivers a potent and moving social message but along with this, it’s also a satisfying horror thriller. This film will stay with you for a while.

Taish Movie Review : Far From Perfect But Thrills And Engages In Equal Measure

Taish Movie Poster
Taish Movie Poster

Taish Movie is an 2020 Indian Bollywood revenge drama film directer is Bejoy Nambiar. The movie starring Pulkit Samrat, Kriti Kharbanda, Jim Sarbh & Harshvardhan Rane is produced by Bejoy Nambiar and Nishant Pitti. The film is being released on ZEE5 an over-the-top media service on 29 October 2020 as feature film and as six episode series simultaneously.

Critics Rating : 3.0/ 5

Taish Movie Review :

The script gives Harshvardhan Rane, Jim Sarbh and Pulkit Samrat equal weightage but none is reduced to a flat character type - they etch out deeply flawed men.

Two Indian families in London turn into sworn enemies. Two friends are sucked into the vortex of the resultant violence. And two pairs of lovers struggle to find their way forward amid a bitter feud triggered by long-suppressed trauma. Taish, created by Bejoy Nambiar for Zee5 and released on the streaming platform both as a six-episode series and a standalone movie, has all the elements in place to make for a slickly directed visceral thriller.

That is mercifully only a minor niggle. The crime drama is shot through with enough momentum and manic energy not to lack the power to stay the course without faltering too often. A few of the plot twists that it employs are admittedly a touch contrived. One that involves a key character who, with the help of a lawyer-friend, engineers a prison sentence for himself to carry out a daring murderous mission inside the jail only to be bailed out before the job is done is especially farfetched. But so much of the second half of the show rests on that act alone that a willing suspension of disbelief becomes an inevitable precondition for the sleight to make full impact.

COMEDY COUPLE REVIEW : SAQIB, SHWETA SHINE BRIGHT IN THIS FRESH YET PREDICTABLE ROM-COM

Comedy Couple Movie Poster
Comedy Couple Movie Poster

Comedy Couple is a 2020 ZEE5 Original Indian Hindi language film directer is  Nachiket Samant and starring Saqib Saleem and Shweta Basu Prasad in lead roles. Touted to be India's first com-rom film, it captures the journey of stand-up comedy duo Deep and Zoya who joke about couple issues on stage but deal with them in real life.

Critic's Rating : 3.0/5

Avg. Users' Rating : 3.0/5

Comedy Couple Movie Review :

Touted to be India’s first and only comedy couple, techie-turned-comic Deep Sharma and his romantic partner Zoya Batra always have their audience rolling with laughter, thanks to the silly yet relatable jokes they crack on stage. But, other than recently attaining the title of being a ‘viral act’ on the internet, the duo has also attracted some unwanted hurdles in their seemingly perfect life. Deep and Zoya, both as different as chalk and cheese, are headed towards troubled waters and they know it all too well. One event leads to another and now they have a conundrum to resolve: whether to keep their differences aside and ride on the wave of their joint success or to shun their collaboration and bow down to what life has in store for them.

Director Nachiket Samant’s ‘Comedy Couple’ is a sweet, endearing love story between an ‘eight/nine on 10’ high-society girl and a self-admittedly average former IT professional from a hamlet in Uttar Pradesh. The narrative is nothing unique but the stand-up angle renders freshness to this otherwise common trope and we dig the chemistry the lead pair shares.

As far as the pace and plot progression go, ‘Comedy Couple’ is off to a rocking start but bumps off to rocky roads soon after. The middle is a bit derailed and draggy, often compromising on its strongest suit: humour. Samant and his army of writers — Raghav Raj Kakker, Kashyap Kapoor, Bikas Ranjan Mishra and Gaurav Sharma — inculcate the hit formulae of comedy, i.e; ‘gaalis’ and ‘sax’ and even bring to light the constant conflict between comedians and pressure groups, but fail to up the ante, especially with that foreseeable climax.

Ginny Weds Sunny Movie Review :

Speaking of arranged marriages, meme material Seema Taparia aka Seema aunty of Netflix’s very own reality show ‘Indian Matchmaking’ was more enjoyable and fascinating to watch than all the stereotypical Punjabi characters put together in this puttar-paneer movie.

The story is as predictable as most generic romantic comedies and even if you’d like to believe it isn’t, the title happily gives away the climax. Given the genre, one doesn’t expect an Agatha Christie mystery anyway, provided the events leading up to the wedding are fun. However, that isn’t the case either. There’s no love or humour in this manipulative romcom. The writing lacks depth and fails to stir emotions. It’s as moving or not (pun intended) as Veere Di Wedding, of course with better performances.

The girl’s mother doubles up as a love guru for Sunny, think Ashok Kumar in Basu Chatterjee’s iconic Chhoti Si Baat. She must help him woo Ginny. Like Asrani, the third wheel here is Ginny’s ex boyfriend-turned- good friend, Delhi ka Richie Rich — Nishant (Suhail Nayyar). The two are bitten by our generation’s biggest glorified dilemma — confusion. They are confused about their relationship status and Sunny is confused about where he stands in Ginny’s life.

Bahut Hua Samman Movie Review :

‘Bahut Hua Sammaan’ revolves around the students of Uttar Bharat University of Varanasi, Bony and Fundoo in particular, who have flunked in their final year. They get frustrated with the fact that their juniors are getting jobs through campus placement while they struggle to even graduate. Pretty soon their lives take a drastic turn when they meet maverick Baba Bakchod (Sanjay Mishra), who sets a plan in motion to earn some quick bucks by robbing the university’s bank lockers. Will this robbery helped them redeem themselves and lead successful lives?

In no time, it becomes evident that Baba Bakchod planned this heist to pocket a very precious possession—the Kohinoor. However, it’s not just him who has his eyes set on the Kohinoor but there are other dangerous people involved as well—notorious Guruji aka Anand Bairagi Maharaj (Dibyendu Bhattacharya), corrupt Union Minister Ajay Singh Parmar (Punkaj Kalraa) and his ruthless assassin, who is also an ex-commando, Lovely Singh (Ram Kapoor). That’s not all, small-time thugs Raju (Bhoopesh Kumar Singh) and Bhola (Sharat Sonu) also try to get their hands on the loot. All in all, things get messier when police inspector, Bobby Tiwari (Nidhi Singh), is roped in to solve the impending case and all the commotion surrounding the heist.

In a nutshell, ‘Bahut Hua Sammaan’ starts off as a goofy comedy but later turns into a conversation about the ongoing socio-economic and political situation of the country that is laced with humour. The film has its heart in the right place, but, sadly execution falters after a point.

Serious Men Movie Review :

For as long as he can remember, Korathi-born and Mumbai-bred Ayyan Mani has always been haunted by the story of how his grandfather died in a running train – someone whispered in his ears that he had accidentally boarded the first-class compartment meant only for Brahmins. Sure, Mani is street smart and it is his strong survival instincts that help him climb up the professional ladder: he is the personal assistant to man-of-science Dr. Acharya (Nassar) at the National Institute of Fundamental Research. But being born into a poor farming family in a remote hamlet in Tamil Nadu has its own ramifications – Mani likes his beer ‘not extremely chilled, not warm’ and is obsessed with a life of dough and dignity for his aankhon-ka-tara Adi. Call it sheer luck or a classic case of rags-to-riches at play, Adi turns out to be a genius who has complex chemical formulae at the tip of his tongue. Also, Mani is running a scam on the side while the nation is revelling in the birth of a genius (they call him chota Einstein at one point). If political leaders are willing to pull the family out of its two-by-two kholi among other generosities, then why the con? Based on Manu Joseph’s book by the same name, director Sudhir Mishra’s ‘Serious Men’ is a satire on the stark contrast (or the lack of it) between the rich and educated and the poor and naïve with slight deviation from its original story.

The serious men of our society are the laughing stock in ‘Serious Men’ and though the film reasonably manages to bring to light the conflict between the elite and the easily disposable, it fails to conclude what could have been an excellent social dialogue on a high note. Guess Mishra took too much credence of Siddiqui’s rant on respect, “Public jisko samajhti nahin hain, usko salaam thokti hain; respect karti hain.”

But is a child this young ready for all that mic-thrusting, caste-based speeches and a scam that his father’s been running? Back in the day, in their native village of Shivpur, when Vijay Chauhan aka Blackie was at the ripe age of 10, his Babuji (Anup Soni) was notorious for being an absolute phattu. But, by pure luck, his son is born with a mean streak and is also an ardent hustler in the making. So, perhaps to prove a point to the villagers and themselves, the father-son duo embarks on a journey of crime that is doomed from the start, again, thanks to Chauhan senior’s namby-pamby ways. Cut to 10 years later, Vijay – now earning the moniker Blackie because of his swindling schemes – is on the run and has settled in Mumbai as a local kaali peeli (hence the name, get it?) driver. But in the current day, the city is fuming with anger as the taxi association calls for a strike for an indefinite period of time until the government meets their demands. Not Blackie though. He refuses to adhere to the directives and looks at it as a window of opportunity to mint money and extract as much as he can from the needy… talk about being morally bankrupt! In comes the salwar-clad ticking time bomb Pooja, who’s clearly on the run from some dangerous people and has a bag full of money and jewels. Her safety, he is not worried about but the hefty moolah, he definitely is. The story of ‘Khaali Peeli’ navigates many a dark alley of Kamathipura (Mumbai’s red-light district) and finds itself back to its place of origin – Uttar Pradesh. What transpires over a period of two days – with a distinct overlap of past and future – is what this dramedy encapsulates.

Flicking the back of his collar while lighting a borrowed cigarette in a Rajinikathesque fashion, Blackie makes an open declaration about his persona to the camera. He doesn’t compromise on two aspects of his vagabond-ish life – tashan and ‘emosan’. The opening shot is evidence enough to predict that the rest of the tour is an out-and-out Bollywood masala flick. And director Maqbool Khan delivers on various accounts. There are creepy hooligans with creepier names (sample this: Yusuf Chikna!), there’s the eternal sacrifice constituting the central theme of the narrative, there is an inspector called Tawde and bullets flying all around the hero, who, well, escapes unhurt! And speaking of the pace of the film, the first 30-40 minutes are absolutely packed with quirky dialogues and has an amount of visual excitement that’s appreciable.

Sure, Vishal-Shekhar music gets you grooving but the three songs that are planted in the movie are just there for the heck of it. Lyricists Rakesh Kumaar and Raj Shekhar have interesting and edgy words to offer in the three tracks that they anchor but, like we said, the songs are a bit out of place.

On a fateful night, local cabbie Blackie (Ishaan Khattar) stumbles upon this pretty – also mouthy and hot-headed – girl Pooja (Ananya Panday). Why does this ‘Aafat’ (by Blackie’s own admission) fall into his lap after all these years and what’s the mayhem all about?‘Khaali Peeli’ is one eventful ride towards redemption, reconnection and, of course, romance!

Khaali Peeli Movie Songs / Music :

The film's music was composed by Vishal–Shekhar, while lyrics were written by Kumaar and Raj Shekhar.

The song "Beyonce Sharma Jaayegi" was criticised online for lyrics that some found racist. The song has been contrasted with Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl", as Rolling Stone India pointed out how on one hand, Beyoncé is working towards the racial empowerment through her song, but the Bollywood song, names her, and says she will be "embarrassed of fairskined Ananya Panday's dancing skills".HuffPost India wrote "What's a bit of racism sprinkled over the regular dose of sexism". News18 India said "It seems despite the Black Lives Matter movement, the hashtags and the social media outrage, Bollywood hasn't learned much about racism". After receiving heavy backlash online, the director Maqbool Khan apologised. On 13 September, the producers changed the spelling of the title, from "Beyoncé" to "Beyonse".News18 India reported that Jay-Z trademarked and protected the name "Beyoncé" and it therefore cannot be used without their permission. The title was subsequently changed again, to "Duniya Sharma Jayegi".The video received 1 million dislikes within its first week on YouTube.

  1. "Duniya Sharma Jaayegi" - Nakash Aziz, Neeti Mohan
