Shakeela Movie Review :

Shakeela (Kajol Chugh) is just another teenage girl growing up in a lush green hamlet of South India. Despite their abject poverty and her mother’s constant bickering, she finds joy in the fun-filled fishing trips with her father and taking part in school plays. But all of that changes with her father’s untimely demise. Shakeela’s mother, who was once a junior artiste, brings all her children to Kerala’s buzzing metropolis Cochin. Being the eldest, Shakeela not only has to take care of her younger siblings but also earn a living. And thus, begins her journey from an innocent young girl to one of the most controversial south Indian actresses, whose sudden rise to fame was just as dramatic as her fall.

Writer-director Indrajit Lankesh chooses a story that has all the trappings of a riveting tale of a powerful protagonist. Desperate times, challenging circumstances, spurts of success and an antagonist, who wields all the clout to defeat any opponent. But the way Lankesh tells Shakeela’s (Richa Chadha) story and derives performances from able stars like Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi is underwhelming, to say the least. The two extremely talented actors are locked in a face-off but it could have been stronger and their pursuit more believable. Having ‘Shakeela’ yo-yo between being a fan-girl and a fierce opponent of the southern superstar Salim (Tripathi) doesn’t come across convincingly at all. Just like why would she narrate her story to a script writer by taking a narco-test when she is the one who approached him to write her biopic in the first place?

The writing commits to show us the significant flashpoints in Shakeela’s professional life, but fails to give us a wholesome glimpse into her personal life. There, it simply scratches the surface and never fully delves into her interpersonal relationships, despite claiming that Shakeela’s onscreen avatar was born out of her need to feed her family than her own ambitions. Use of montages to convey important life events and plot twists often conveyed through caricature news anchors, don’t always make us root for her either. Caricature and stereotypes are rather one too many – from a lazy and poorly enacted scene involving the iconic Silk Smitha to showing most south producers, financers and audiences as either lecherous or starry-eyed buffoons.

On the plus side, we have some meet cute moments from young Shakeela’s school days played by a very likeable Kajol Chugh. She balances her character’s strength and vulnerability with seasoned excellence. Richa Chadha fits her part really well, looking every bit as voluptuous, vulnerable and resolute as Shakeela. But we’re not sure if it’s the writing or her own style that her portrayal seems a bit too restrained, to the point of being underwhelming. Interestingly, Richa completely ignores the need to put up any south-like accent despite her character and the story being totally rooted in the southern ecosystem. Pankaj Tripathi, on the other hand, seems to have had the most fun playing a typically toxic south superstar of the nineties, whose superstardom overshadowed his creepy character and highly questionable acting skills.

The music is average and easily forgettable. The era of nineties and early 2000s is depicted through modest production values, but the film shows some of the most scenic and hitherto unexplored beautifully misty locations of southern India. Despite the film’s overtly racy subject, ‘Shakeela’ manages to put out (no pun intended), a decently aesthetic product.

Overall, ‘Shakeela’ is an honest attempt that tells a much lesser known story of a fallen star, but more conviction and stronger writing, could have propelled this not-so-dirty picture to newer highs.

Coolie No. 1 is an 2020 Indian Bollywood comedy film directer is David Dhawan and producer is Vashu Bhagnani. A remake of the 1995 film of the same name which itself is a remake of the 1993 Tamil film Chinna Mapillai, the film stars Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan, with Paresh Rawal in a supporting role. Film Shooting Started on 8 August 2019 in Bangkok. Coolie No.1 Movie Review :

It’s love at first sight when Sarah’s (Sara Ali Khan) picture lands up in Raju’s (Varun Dhawan) lap. A coolie by profession, Raju wants to make Sarah his wife, by hook or by crook. This ties in very well with Pandit Jai Kishen’s (Javed Jaaferi) revenge plan on Sarah’s businessman father Jeffery Rozario (Paresh Rawal), who had insulted Kishen for bringing him a rishta that wasn’t of his own social status. And thus, begins the charade of Raju posing as the prince of Singapore, to lure Sarah and her family.

Director David Dhawan and his screenplay writer Rumi Jaffrey do not alter the script in this remake of their 1995 blockbuster with the same name, but this 2020 version has everything glossed over. The scale is bigger but the final product is definitely not better. Varun Dhawan slips into not only Govinda’s shoes but also spoofs his way to glory, imitating almost every iconic actor of our times. From Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Nana Patekar to finally Mithun – Varun’s only brief, it seems, was to make no sense of his act at all, be completely over-the-top and just have fun with whatever he is doing. For some odd reason though, his skin tone keeps changing. Sarah Ali Khan looks all glammed up and gorgeous, but that cannot eclipse the need for her to work harder on her comic timing. Not that she has a lot of scope in this all-male show.

We also have Paresh Rawal (playing a catholic businessman) always crooning a Goan song when he is happy and saying, ‘Heavens in the dock,” when he chances upon an idea. It’s really the innate ability of the actor to make such ridiculous parts entertaining. Jaaved Jaafferi and Rajpal Yadav are also good additions for some harmless fun, but we wish we had more of these real comedians. The track of Sakshi Talsania and Sahil Vaid’s romance comes across as forced. They all mouth Farhad Samji’s typically silly lines that are unabashedly juvenile and sometimes chuckle-worthy, depending on who is delivering them.

The film’s music is catchy and the songs are well-shot with all the shenanigans of a grand Bollywood potboiler in place. It makes for a good watch, but the ‘Mirchi lagi’ song deserved a much better remake. Oh, and that’s true for the film as well. So the only trick to get entertained by this insanity is to admit how loud and pointless it is without comparing it with the original.

AAK vs AK is an 2020 Indian Bollywood black comedy thriller film directee is Vikramaditya Motwane and stars Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap. Writter is Avinash Sampath, the film follows a film director who kidnaps the daughter of a star and shoots it as the star searches for her. AK vs AK Movie Review :

The Netflix original, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, blurs the line between reality and fiction. Anil Kapoor (AK) and Anurag Kashyap (AK) play themselves and take swipes at each other in a trippy actor-director tussle.

An off-the-wall two-hander that bends a whole bunch of Bollywood rules, AK vs AK is unclassifiable fare. For the sake of convenience, let us call it is a mockumentary where a hostage thriller meets a madcap caper that swivels ceaselessly in a manner that we did not know was within the realms of possibility in a Hindi movie.

The film opens in a veteran movie star's vanity van. A 'persona non grata' director sneaks in and broaches a grotesque idea for a movie. It's the actor's birthday and he is late for a family get-together. But the supplicant is in no mood to take no for an answer. That is precisely what AK vs AK is like: so way-out that it has no no-go areas.

The Netflix original film, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, blurs the line between reality and fiction. Enduring Hindi movie star Anil Kapoor (AK) and independent cinema maverick Anurag Kashyap (AK) play themselves and take swipes at each other in a trippy actor-director tussle that is, for all intents and purposes, an extended in-joke. The action unfolds in the course of one night - December 24, Kapoor's birthday.

The rollercoaster encounter, filmed fly-on-the-wall style, centres on the kidnapping of Kapoor's daughter Sonam (who puts in an appearance along with brother Harshvardhan, who laments the harm Motwane's BhaveshJoshi Superhero has done to his career and hopes Kashyap will help reverse his fortunes with Bhavesh Joshi 2).

Kashyap, a director humiliated in public by Kapoor, is out to settle scores. He conjures up a script that involves a race against time to find and rescue the hostage before sunrise, all to be filmed in real time. Kapoor is beside himself with rage but the danger that his daughter is in compels him to play along.

AK vs AK is a wild, wacky shot in the dark. It could have been a disaster had the brains behind it did not know what they were up against. That certainly isn't the case. The film's self-awareness borders on the staggering.

All things considered, AK vs AK is a minor miracle. It's worth embracing with all our might. It is Hindi cinema's Halley's Comet. It is unlikely we will see anything like this ever again.

Unpaused Movie is an 2020 Indian Bollywood anthology film consisting of five short segments directer is Raj & DK, Nitya Mehra, Nikkhil Advani, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Avinash Arun. With an Starcast, the stories revolved around lives of people impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered on 18 December, 2020 on Amazon Prime Video and met with mostly positive reviews from critics.

Unpaused Movie Review :

Unpaused feels like a warm blanket on a winter night. It not only shields you from the cold but also gives you courage to hang on until the sun shows up the next morning. Dire situations may change us or alter our thinking but life goes on unpaused and it only reinstates our faith in humanity. Revolving around a common theme of the pandemic, five filmmakers dedicate their short to this global horror’s consequences - virtual love, thoughts on suicide and mental health, unemployment and survival, loneliness and companionship.

Raj & DK’s Glitch starring Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher is a futuristic love story that isn’t bleak and is strangely real. Years from now, will people still yearn physical contact when they seek love or would virtual intimacy, textual relationship be enough? Opposites attract in this universe too but can they overlook their differences? Gulshan is a hypochondriac so he won’t step out of his house while Saiyami is a warrior, who is willing to put her life on the line to find a cure for the virus. This is perhaps the most unique of the lot, even audacious but not the most effective. You don’t feel invested in the characters, their fears or whether they end up together. The concept is interesting, execution quirky but it fails to draw you in.

Vishaanu featuring Abhishek Bannerjee and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan by Avinash Arun feels like an idea borrowed straight from ‘Parasite’ - unemployment and the financial and class disparity in metropolitan cities. The lead characters secretly live in a plush sample flat in an under construction upscale Mumbai high rise. They have AC, bathtub and all the comforts in the house except for food. This track feels a tad out of place to be honest. It has its moments but is unable to convey what it intends to portray - resilience and hope - in a satirical fashion.

Social media may have shrunk the world but has it got us closer? Unpaused makes us pause a bit and think. It’s relevant and both uplifting and melancholic. This one makes for an interesting watch.

Torbaaz Movie Review :  A feeble attempt at showcasing death and destruction through ruthless means

Torbaaz is an 2020 Indian Bollywood action thriller film directer is Girish Malik. Sanjay Dutt enacts the lead role of an army officer, while Nargis Fakhri and Rahul Dev play other prominent characters. Torbaaz was earlier scheduled for a theatrical release, which couldn't happen owing to COVID-19 pandemic, after which the makers confirmed its distribution contract with Netflix who began streaming it and directly released it online on 11 December 2020.

Torbaaz Movie Review :

Even after all these years, the pangs of separation are so intense that Dr. Khan sits at Delhi airport – all set to fly to Afghanistan, when the authorities announce his name for final boarding – but the dejected man in him lies to the ground staff, saying, “I have lost my boarding pass,” as the torn piece of paper sits comfortably next to him. Such is his fear of the place and the melancholic memories attached to them. His wife and son were blown up by a suicide bomber in Kabul, where he was holding a post at the Indian Embassy –who also happened to be a 10-year-old child.Despite the trauma, he visits the adoption function of a refugee camp dedicated to kids who do are burdened by misfortune and despair at a tender age and takes it upon himself to change the fate of these helpless individuals through the game of cricket.

When communal disharmony and terror-torn cities are cherry-picked as the central theme with the subtext of sports enthusiasts serving as a solid ground for a human interest story that is sure to resonate, you expect the cinematography to pierce through your heart. Unfortunately, that is not the case with Hiroo Keswani’s work behind the camera in this crime drama. Art director Martand Mishra erects a set that is far from what a war-torn region looks like – underwhelming to say the least. Not just that, the emotional turbulence that the former doctor experiences during the course of the film does not feel real and relatable – a sneak peek into his life before tragedy struck would have done the trick. Director Girish Malik makes a feeble attempt at portraying a strong sense of community in the face of adversity but the smaller characters were complete misfits and did not render any depth to their individual roles.

A film on such a delicate subject, and with a veteran actor like Sanjay Dutt, could have created a marvellous cinematic experience for all those tearjerker loyalists out there. Sadly, it ends being a ho-hum story lacking gravitas.

Indoo Ki Jawani Movie Review :

From adolescent boys to retired uncles, everyone’s leching on the voluptuous Indira Gupta (Kiara Advani) and by her own admission, the only thing that’s trending on Ghaziabad’s social media is #IndooKiJawani. She’s dating a sleazy loser, who is desperate to make out with her, but Indoo won’t put out, unless he mans up and formally asks for her hand. He ends up cheating on her and Indoo turns to her trusted friend Sonal (Mallika Dua), who is an encyclopedia on ‘what boys want.’ She convinces Indoo that all men are skirt-chasing pervs and the only thing they want, is to get into her pants. So get on to ‘Dinder’ (like ‘Tinder’…get it?) and swipe right for no-strings attached action, before it’s too late. Don’t ask for the logic here, but Indoo takes this ill-advice and in her very first swipe, a handsome young dude named Samar (Aditya Seal) lands up at her house, when she’s home alone. Meanwhile, the town is abuzz with some Pakistanis on the loose and Indoo could’ve just inadvertently invited trouble home.

The first ten minutes of ‘Indoo Ki Jawani’ are surprisingly promising. In those few early scenes, we get the feeling that this could be the comic spy thriller with unpredictable twists, but soon, the plot derails and never gets back on track. As creepy old men and weird teens make a beeline to grab Indoo’s attention (or whatever else they can), it becomes amply clear that casual sexism is going to be passed off as comedy, which is loud, unfunny and downright crass. And without an ounce of conviction in the telling.

Mallika Dua, once again plays the stereotypical small-town girl, who’s the heroine’s BFF. She manages to bring in some laughs with her spoofy north accent, but once all the action winds down to Indoo’s home, there’s no redemption for this film.
