"Thank You for Coming" movie Review (2023) - A Heartfelt but Flawed Tribute

Thank You for Coming Movie Review
Thank You for Coming Movie Review

"Thank You for Coming" is a heartfelt and emotionally charged film that pays tribute to the complexities of human relationships. While it manages to capture moments of genuine emotion and connection, it also stumbles in its execution, resulting in a movie that falls short of its potential.

Thank you for Coming Movie Review is:  3 Star Out of 5 star

The film, directed by Karan Boolani and starring Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, and Shibani Bedi, tells the story of five best friends who assemble together at a family gathering and must navigate the hilarious and heartwarming consequences of their lie, discovering the true depth of their friendship and love.

The film follows the intertwined lives of several characters, each dealing with their own set of personal challenges. It explores themes of love, loss, redemption, and the impact we have on one another's lives. The narrative is structured in a non-linear fashion, jumping back and forth in time to reveal the intricate web of connections among the characters.

One of the film's strengths lies in its ensemble cast. The characters feel authentic, and the chemistry between them adds depth to the story. It's a testament to the actors' abilities that they manage to salvage some of the film's weaker moments.

The cinematography and direction of "Thank You for Coming" also deserve praise. The film is visually stunning, with beautiful shots that capture the essence of various settings, from bustling city streets to serene countryside landscapes. The director's choice to use different visual styles to represent different time periods and emotional states is a clever and effective touch.

However, where "Thank You for Coming" falls short is in its narrative execution. The non-linear storytelling, while ambitious, sometimes becomes confusing and disjointed. Viewers may find themselves struggling to piece together the timeline and the relationships between characters. Additionally, some subplots feel underdeveloped and rushed, leaving certain characters and their arcs feeling incomplete.

The film's pacing also suffers, as it occasionally meanders through scenes that don't contribute significantly to the overall narrative. This results in a sense of stagnation and may test the patience of some viewers.

Despite these shortcomings, "Thank You for Coming" has its moments of brilliance. The emotional payoffs in certain scenes are genuinely moving, and the film succeeds in delivering a poignant message about the profound impact we can have on one another's lives, whether through love, friendship, or chance encounters.

In conclusion, "Thank You for Coming" is a film with a big heart and a sincere message about the connections we make in life. It's a movie that showcases the highs and lows of human relationships but struggles with its storytelling and pacing. While it may not be a cinematic masterpiece, it's worth a watch for those who appreciate character-driven dramas and are willing to navigate its narrative intricacies. Ultimately, it's a solid effort that could have been even better with a tighter script and more focused storytelling.

The film's direction by Tinu Suresh Desai is tight and focused, allowing the suspense to build gradually, keeping the audience engaged throughout. The cinematography captures the gritty and treacherous conditions of the coal mines brilliantly, adding to the overall intensity of the film.

The music and background score complement the film beautifully, enhancing the overall impact of the narrative. The songs are soulful and perfectly placed, adding emotional resonance to key moments.

"Mission Raniganj" is a testament to Akshay Kumar's dedication to his craft and his commitment to delivering meaningful and entertaining cinema. It's a gripping thriller that keeps you hooked from beginning to end, with outstanding performances, well-executed action, and a compelling story. While some may argue that it treads familiar territory in terms of the rescue mission genre, it still manages to bring a fresh perspective to the table.

In conclusion, "Mission Raniganj" is a must-watch for Akshay Kumar fans and anyone who enjoys adrenaline-pumping action combined with heartfelt storytelling. While it may not be groundbreaking in terms of its premise, it more than makes up for it with its execution and performances. Kaagaz Movie Review :

When they joke about nasbandi (vasectomy) and the Emergency losing steam, it dawns on you that the setting is late 70s. And during that remarkable period in the history of India, there lived a man – in a small hamlet in the northern part of the country – who was stripped off his family inheritance by fraudulent means. And the worst aspect of this unfortunate occurrence is that it was his own kin who had declared him legally dead over the tiny fraction of a land he co-inherited with them. “Aaj se tu humara rishtedaar nahin, hum tere kuch nahin,” warns the aunt, after disclosing the elaborate scam they had subjected him to. Bharat Lal could be jolly, but he is not juvenile. The otherwise unsuspecting man then vouches to fight the estranged family, and the ‘tarik-pe-tarik’ culture that the Indian administrative system had gotten used to. One letter, one hooligan, one police personnel at a time.

In a world where people are grappling with intolerance of all kinds – from religious freedom to the freedom of speech, which cuts at the root of democracy – the bold and unabashed ‘Kaagaz’ seems to have dropped on Zee5 (and limited single-screen theatres in and around North India) at the right moment. This story, which is loosely based on the life of a man who had met a similar fate back in the day, is one that is sure to evoke a sense of confidence and self-esteem amongst its target audience.

The essence of the Indian heartland and the era that’s far bygone has been aptly captured by costume designer Sujata Rajain, and Arkodeb Mukherjee’s cinematography is rustic and relevant.

To sum it up, ‘Kaagaz’ could have been the go-to movie for those seeking a burst of inspiration, but it ends up being a uni-dimensional masterclass on one man’s acting prowess. Not that we are complaining, but the film had the potential to tug at the heart strings. Alas! It was not to be.

The arrival of six children and various other relatives adds to the chaos. What's more - old contentions are brought into limelight and the family struggles to make it through the 13 days of mourning. To exacerbate the situation, it is revealed that Ramprasad owes the banks a huge debt and now his children must bear the brunt of paying it back.

The key clashes, of course, lie with Ram Prasad’s children, especially the brothers – Gajraj aka Gajju (Manoj Pahwa), Manoj (Ninad Kamat), Pankaj (Vinay Pathak), and Nishant aka Nitu (Parambrata Chatterjee). They struggle with managing their family responsibilities, since they are married and have their own kids. And the topic of conversation veers towards how to take care of their mother, now that their father has passed away.

The cast makes it real with their fine performances. Manoj Pahwa, as the oldest in the kin brings in some laughs. Vinay Pathak and Ninad Kamat help in pushing the narrative forward in their own ways. Parambrata Chattopadhyay stands out as the youngest and most responsible brother. His strained relationship with his on-screen spouse, Konkana Sen Sharma, is well portrayed. Supriya Pathak Kapur depicts the torment her character Savitri goes through. There are too many characters in the film, yet, Pathak makes her presence felt within the limited screen time. Prasad’s grandchildren, especially Rahul played by Vikrant Massey, and the romantic angle with a neighbourhood girl adds some humour element to the intense drama.

In a nutshell, despite all the good intentions and a talented cast, ‘Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi’ fails to make the desired impact and eventually turns out to be an average family entertainer.

Nail Polish Movie Review :

Set in Lucknow, ‘Nail Polish’ revolves around DCP Sunil Sachdev (Sameer Dharmadhikari), who stumbles upon evidence of migrant worker's kids being abducted, murdered with their bodies being set to fire. This leads him to an unexpected suspect, a former Army officer Veer Singh (Manav Kaul), who worked as an undercover spy. Post-retirement, he continues to live a gentleman's life with a great reputation working as a coach in a sports academy. Siddharth Jaisingh aka Sid (Arjun Rampal), a high-profile defence lawyer agrees to fight this case as he is promised a Rajya Sabha seat consequent to his winning Veer's case. And the state hires public prosecutor Amit Kumar (Anand Tiwari) to make sure Veer is proven guilty. This leads them to the courtroom trial where the drama unfolds. And an unforeseen turn in the case proves that there is more to it than meets the eye.

Legal dramas are a tough genre to pull off without falling prey to its tropes. On that count, Bugs Bhargava Krishna has done a commendable job as being both director and writer of the film. Without wasting any time, the director comes straight to the point. He takes us quickly through the pieces of evidence which might prove Veer guilty. The screenplay is quite intriguing and keeps you snared initially, however, what follows is predictable. Still, both the backstories and the court proceedings in this murder trial are flawlessly intertwined which leaves the viewers guessing till the very end. The background score by Sanjay Wandrekar is impactful and helps in enhancing the drama. Overall, ‘Nail Polish’ is inspired by true incidents but it lacks the unnerving tension one ideally anticipates from such films.

All said, ‘Nail Polish’ is a compelling thriller which can be watched for its story and most importantly the outstanding performances.

Shakeela Movie Review :

Shakeela (Kajol Chugh) is just another teenage girl growing up in a lush green hamlet of South India. Despite their abject poverty and her mother’s constant bickering, she finds joy in the fun-filled fishing trips with her father and taking part in school plays. But all of that changes with her father’s untimely demise. Shakeela’s mother, who was once a junior artiste, brings all her children to Kerala’s buzzing metropolis Cochin. Being the eldest, Shakeela not only has to take care of her younger siblings but also earn a living. And thus, begins her journey from an innocent young girl to one of the most controversial south Indian actresses, whose sudden rise to fame was just as dramatic as her fall.

Writer-director Indrajit Lankesh chooses a story that has all the trappings of a riveting tale of a powerful protagonist. Desperate times, challenging circumstances, spurts of success and an antagonist, who wields all the clout to defeat any opponent. But the way Lankesh tells Shakeela’s (Richa Chadha) story and derives performances from able stars like Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi is underwhelming, to say the least. The two extremely talented actors are locked in a face-off but it could have been stronger and their pursuit more believable. Having ‘Shakeela’ yo-yo between being a fan-girl and a fierce opponent of the southern superstar Salim (Tripathi) doesn’t come across convincingly at all. Just like why would she narrate her story to a script writer by taking a narco-test when she is the one who approached him to write her biopic in the first place?

The writing commits to show us the significant flashpoints in Shakeela’s professional life, but fails to give us a wholesome glimpse into her personal life. There, it simply scratches the surface and never fully delves into her interpersonal relationships, despite claiming that Shakeela’s onscreen avatar was born out of her need to feed her family than her own ambitions. Use of montages to convey important life events and plot twists often conveyed through caricature news anchors, don’t always make us root for her either. Caricature and stereotypes are rather one too many – from a lazy and poorly enacted scene involving the iconic Silk Smitha to showing most south producers, financers and audiences as either lecherous or starry-eyed buffoons.

On the plus side, we have some meet cute moments from young Shakeela’s school days played by a very likeable Kajol Chugh. She balances her character’s strength and vulnerability with seasoned excellence. Richa Chadha fits her part really well, looking every bit as voluptuous, vulnerable and resolute as Shakeela. But we’re not sure if it’s the writing or her own style that her portrayal seems a bit too restrained, to the point of being underwhelming. Interestingly, Richa completely ignores the need to put up any south-like accent despite her character and the story being totally rooted in the southern ecosystem. Pankaj Tripathi, on the other hand, seems to have had the most fun playing a typically toxic south superstar of the nineties, whose superstardom overshadowed his creepy character and highly questionable acting skills.

The music is average and easily forgettable. The era of nineties and early 2000s is depicted through modest production values, but the film shows some of the most scenic and hitherto unexplored beautifully misty locations of southern India. Despite the film’s overtly racy subject, ‘Shakeela’ manages to put out (no pun intended), a decently aesthetic product.

Overall, ‘Shakeela’ is an honest attempt that tells a much lesser known story of a fallen star, but more conviction and stronger writing, could have propelled this not-so-dirty picture to newer highs.

Coolie No.1 Movie Review :

It’s love at first sight when Sarah’s (Sara Ali Khan) picture lands up in Raju’s (Varun Dhawan) lap. A coolie by profession, Raju wants to make Sarah his wife, by hook or by crook. This ties in very well with Pandit Jai Kishen’s (Javed Jaaferi) revenge plan on Sarah’s businessman father Jeffery Rozario (Paresh Rawal), who had insulted Kishen for bringing him a rishta that wasn’t of his own social status. And thus, begins the charade of Raju posing as the prince of Singapore, to lure Sarah and her family.

Director David Dhawan and his screenplay writer Rumi Jaffrey do not alter the script in this remake of their 1995 blockbuster with the same name, but this 2020 version has everything glossed over. The scale is bigger but the final product is definitely not better. Varun Dhawan slips into not only Govinda’s shoes but also spoofs his way to glory, imitating almost every iconic actor of our times. From Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Nana Patekar to finally Mithun – Varun’s only brief, it seems, was to make no sense of his act at all, be completely over-the-top and just have fun with whatever he is doing. For some odd reason though, his skin tone keeps changing. Sarah Ali Khan looks all glammed up and gorgeous, but that cannot eclipse the need for her to work harder on her comic timing. Not that she has a lot of scope in this all-male show.

We also have Paresh Rawal (playing a catholic businessman) always crooning a Goan song when he is happy and saying, ‘Heavens in the dock,” when he chances upon an idea. It’s really the innate ability of the actor to make such ridiculous parts entertaining. Jaaved Jaafferi and Rajpal Yadav are also good additions for some harmless fun, but we wish we had more of these real comedians. The track of Sakshi Talsania and Sahil Vaid’s romance comes across as forced. They all mouth Farhad Samji’s typically silly lines that are unabashedly juvenile and sometimes chuckle-worthy, depending on who is delivering them.

The film’s music is catchy and the songs are well-shot with all the shenanigans of a grand Bollywood potboiler in place. It makes for a good watch, but the ‘Mirchi lagi’ song deserved a much better remake. Oh, and that’s true for the film as well. So the only trick to get entertained by this insanity is to admit how loud and pointless it is without comparing it with the original.
