Maska Movie Review:
Maska is a feel-good film that brings two of the most loved stars of Bollywood - Manisha Koirala and Jaaved Jaaferi - together. They bear the burden of the entire film and make it palatable.
From sharing Maggi with your friends to smoking away with your colleagues to destress, an adda is a sanctuary for most of us. Neeraj Udhwani's Maska is the story of one such adda caught between two generations - one that considers it an essential part of its legacy, and the other, for whom it is nothing more than bricks and mortar.
Our protagonist in the Netflix film is Rumi Irani (Prit Kamani), who has inherited the gift of cooking along with a cafe called Cafe Rustom, from his Iranian ancestors. The cafe is adda for many oldies in the area, who have grown attached to it over the years.
Rumi, however, has no interest in running the cafe as he wants to become an actor. His mother Diana Irani (Manisha Koirala) tries to talk him into it, but he is stubborn and there is nothing she can do about it.
After this, the film strolls on an obvious path and concludes on a very predictable note. And yes, there is a ghost from the past too, the most refreshing part of the film, if you ask us.
Maska brings two of the most loved stars of Bollywood - Manisha Koirala and Jaaved Jaaferi - together. Every time Manisha smiles on screen or gets angry with her hopeless son, you sit up and take note. She has portrayed the role of a stout Parsi woman with much ease in the film.
Jaaved, on the other hand, has continued to charm us with his warm presence in Maska. Though his screen time is limited, he doesn't miss a single opportunity to make us laugh in those few minutes. However, among the young actors - Prit Kamani, Shirley Setia and Nikita Dutta - only Nikita stands out. Rest are easily forgettable.
