Darbar Movie Review :

‘Darbaan’ is an adaptation of a 1918 short story ‘Khokababur Pratyabartan’ written by the legendary Rabindranath Tagore. It tells the story of the inseparable bond between a master and his caretaker. Set in Dhanbad’s Jharia village, a coal mine owner Naren Tripathi’s (Harsh Chhaya) son Anukul aka Anu shares a special relationship with their most trusted manservant Raicharan aka Raichu (Sharib Hashmi). The film takes one back to 1971, the year India’s coal mines were nationalised. Vastly affected by that, Naren suffers a loss of wealth and has to leave his town and all the domestic help he had. The world of Raichu used to begin and end with Anu but they were separated in such difficult times.

Many years later, Anukul (Sharad Kelkar), now all grown up and with a family of his own, rehires Raicharan to take care of his son, Siddhu. The always-happy-to-help Raicharan is back on duty, which leaves his better half Bhuri (Rasika Dugal) neglected once again. However, an unfortunate incident changes the entire equation: Raicharan is blamed when Anukul and his wife Charul (Flora Saini) lose their son.

All said, ‘Darbaan’ is an unusual story of loyalty, friendship, caregiving and the ultimate sacrifice that is powered by superlative performances, which make it a noteworthy tale. Definitely, a must watch.

Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa Review : Nawazuddin Siddiqui Is Brilliant In Parable Of Pain

Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa Film Poster
Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa Film Poster

Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa is an 2020 (2013) Hindi dark comedy film directer is Buddhadev Dasgupta. The film about a detective in search of himself, stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the title role, followed by Ananya Chatterjee, Pankaj Tripathi. After its premiere on 17 October 2013 at the BFI London Film Festival, the film was also screened at the 2013 International Film Festival of Kerala. The film will be released on Eros Now on 20 November 2020.

Critic's Rating : 3.5/5

Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa Review :

Nawazuddin's interpretation of a man who darts back and forth between earnestness and resignation and Buddhadeb Dasgupta's mastery over the medium make it a must watch.

When director Buddhadeb Dasgupta is at his best in Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa, his fourth Hindi narrative feature, he captures life's broken rhythms beautifully and touchingly even as he celebrates the resilience of a little man.

Streaming on Eros Now, the film, which alternates between the brooding and the lively, and the wistful and the sardonic, is shot through with Dasgupta's distinctive, often deadpan poetic flourishes and enlivened by a scintillatingly pitch-perfect Nawazuddin Siddiqui performance.

The melancholic tone of Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa is leavened with nostalgia for the receding light; the pessimistic air is tempered with lingering hope of regeneration; the hard, meditative edge is softened by sustained humanism. The treat is redoubled by the lead actor, perfectly cast as a private investigator who is more lost than the prodigals he is tasked to find.Dasgupta suspends the titular figure, the man's tale, and its spatial parameters somewhere between acute realism and genteel, tactile fancy. The eponymous protagonist is a faltering, unassuming detective unlike any we have encountered in Hindi cinema before. His job is to find answers. He poses questions instead.

Mohammad Anwar isn't the cocky, tough-talking type either. He recalls with fondness his rural postman-father and his "hazaar khat, hazaar kahaniyan". He breaks into a gentle jig as he sings a number inspired by a Sukumar Ray nonsense rhyme (Hattima Timtim...). He creates a dreamy world for himself and repeatedly retreats into it.Anwar helps a woman (Farrukh Jaffar in a luminous cameo) cross a street, befriends her in the bargain and is treated to tales of her probably imaginary travels, which, in turn, trigger wanderlust in him and take his mind back to his boyhood years. A young girl (Amrita Chatterjee), a neighbour, sneaks up to his door every now and then and eavesdrops on Anwar as he converses with his pet.

These flashes of whimsy elevate the struggles of an insignificant outsider who pursues people and seeks the truth all in a day's work but is barely able to fathom the purpose - and meaning - of his own life to the level of one man's epic quest for happiness. Anwar is lost in a city that barely tolerates the likes of him. The assignments that he lands draw him out of his self and reveal key facets of his character, one layer at a time, but closure rarely comes his way.The only true friend he has is the dog he rescued when the original owner abandoned the canine because it had scabies. The animal is his drinking mate, too - it has a fondness for the rum that the master drinks every evening in a home where both drinking and pets are forbidden.

There is much that the self-effacing Anwar has lost in life, including his childhood, the village of his growing-up years, his maternal grandmother's imposing parental home, and the woman he loved. It is understandable why he is so attached to the dog - it is the only living creature he has found and retained in a lifetime of joys that have slipped out of his grasp.

The big city lets the people on its fringes hide themselves and their true feelings but offers them no solace. But Anwar isn't one to give up on his hopes and principles. One case establishes Anwar's broadmindedness, another brings to the fore his generous spirit, and a third helps him get in touch with his innermost urges.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is absolutely brilliant in this parable of pain and pining. The actor's captivating, acutely angular interpretation of a man who darts seamlessly back and forth between earnestness and resignation and Dasgupta's mastery over the medium make Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa a must watch.

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari Movie Review :

When Gurunam Singh Dhillon (Manoj Phawa) had taken the leap of faith and shifted base to Bombay from Punjab – with the hopes of making it big in the city – he not only married the love of his life (Seema Bhargava), but also inherited 22 buffaloes. Cut to 1995, Papa Dhillon now has everything he had ever hoped for and has built Jai Matarani Doondh Bhandar with love, dahi and lots of paneer (brace yourselves: there’s a lot of dairy reference in the movie for all you lactose-intolerant peeps). But one characteristic trait that he could not hand down to his only son, Suraj Singh Dhillon (Diljit Dosanjh), is his innate ability to win over girls.

So when the greedy pundit brings home the kundali of an English-speaking, shorts-donning girl from Bhandup, the entire Dhillon clan jumps with excitement. Not so soon; a little someone stinks of ghee and must be warded off for good. Multiple rejections later, Suraj’s bestie Sukhi, who only mimics Amitabh Bachchan from his angry young man phase, suggests he be the baddie that girls usually hanker after. So when a prospect finally gives her nod, he loses that last flickering hope to a set of photos of him chugging beer

Who has defamed him and the family? And, most importantly, which ‘bharatiya naari’ is going to marry him now? Suraj refuses to dusk away and he must now be avenged. The culprit: self-proclaimed wedding detective with an impressive repertoire of 48 exposés, Madhu Mangal Rane, is oblivious to his dubious plans though. What happens when these two metaphor-tossing ego maniacs clash, and who’s to lose what here? ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari’ takes a dig at the concept of arranged marriages and all the snooping around that happens within the families for that ‘one achha ladka/ladki’, and, guess what, we are laughing!

All said and done, ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari’ is a witty satire – on the gori-kaali hangover, what qualifies as good or bad behaviour in today’s world and how little soothsayers know about marriages. Hop on and join in in the tug of war!

Sir Movie Review :

The male protagonist of the film - U.S returned architect Ashwin (Vivek Gomber), while discussing relationship woes with a friend says, that he can’t be the guy who messages or calls a woman randomly if that’s what she expects. A few scenes later, he picks up the phone and calls Ratna (Tillotama Shome), his live-in Maharashtrian maid, who is on a 3-day leave for her sister’s wedding in a village. A bit lost without her in his own house, when asked by her, “Sir, Kuch kaam tha kya?”, he replies after a brief pause, “Nahi, Aise hi phone kiya.” They don’t talk much but that phone call is enough for either to know what it means. Love makes you do things you tell yourself you won’t.

Director Rohena Gera’s SIR comprises exquisite moments like these. They help you interpret unsaid feelings between two people, who find their soulmate in the most unlikely scenario. Gera masterfully uses the language of silence and juxtaposes the lead characters to bring out their commonalities despite the massive class disparity. Loneliness and emotional turmoil doesn’t differentiate between the rich and poor.

Ratna firmly says she wants to be a fashion designer when Ashwin ‘sir’ asks her if she hopes to be a tailor. In her world, dreams don’t come with a class certificate. And in his, societal labels find more prominence than feelings. In a Julia Roberts-esque scene from Pretty Woman, the maid is shown the door and humiliated when she tries to check out an upscale fashion boutique in Mumbai. But nothing deters her from telling herself that a servant too has the right to become who she wants to be. The writing doesn’t reek of prejudice or hate but optimism and hope, even as the treatment stays nuanced and realistic. When Ashwin’s friend asks him, ‘how can you possibly date your maid!’, the remarks aren’t condescending but concerning for a third person who isn’t blinded by love.

Chhalaang Movie Review :

Mahinder Singh aka Montu (Rajkummar Rao) is a slacker. From waking up long after the sun is up to loitering around with his much older bum-chum Masterji (Saurabh Shukla), Montu has little purpose in life. He is super complacent at his job of a PT teacher in his own school, which he landed only because his father (Satish Kaushik) recommended him to the principal (Ila Arun). When he is not wandering around with Masterji, he is playing moral police, doling out instant punishment to space-starved valentine couples. During one such self-assigned patrolling, he hauls up an older couple, thinking they are just fooling around. He even names and shames them by getting their picture published in a local newspaper. But as luck would have it, their daughter Neelima aka Neelu (Nushrratt Bharuccha) ends up at the same school as the new computer teacher. While Montu instantly starts crushing on her, Neelu is obviously quite miffed with him. And thus begins nafrat pyaar ki pehli seedi kinda situation and anyone who has watched even two Bollywood films would know how that will go. But the real twist in the tale comes with the entry of a new PT coach IM Singh (Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub). Riding a Royal Enflied, Singh is literally the better version of Montu, who could whisk away the poor chap’s naukri and chokri in a flash. That’s when our man Montu realises that he needs to up his game or risk losing it all, including his credibility. He declares an all-out sporting war with Singh that also puts to test his own ability to teach. So from this point onwards, some conflict and sporting action kicks in.

Ironically, the writers of ‘Chhalaang’ (Luv Ranjan, Aseem Arrora and Zeishan Quadri) never seem to take the leap of faith in making it an adrenaline pumping sporting spectacle. Neither does the movie explore the nuances of a sweet love story. It only flirts with the idea of making it a love triangle.

Ludo Movie Review :

Anurag Basu's 'Ludo' which blends in characters, stories and genres starts off with a grisly murder by Sattu Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi). Then, as parallel stories and characters emerge, so do some varying situations.Akash (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Ahana (Sanya Malhotra) find themselves in a pickle when they discover that a video clip of them having sex has gone viral on the internet. With Ahana's wedding scheduled in a few days to another man, they try to get to the bottom of this.

On the other hand, an ex-convict, Bittu (Abhishek Bachchan) is released from jail after six years only to realise that his wife and little daughter have moved on.At the same time, when a doting wife, Pinky(Sana Fatima Shaikh) finds out that her husband has been accused of a murder, she runs to her childhood sweetheart, Alok aka Alu (Rajkummar Rao) to help bail him out.

And elsewhere, a down on luck salesman, Rahul (Rohit Saraf) and a nurse who is repeatedly bullied at work, Sheeja (Pearle Maney) go about their respective days, not knowing that soon their lives will take a dramatic turn.At the onset, 'Ludo' seems to strike with an interesting premise. The catchy opening track, a compelling start and a quirky build up manages to set an intriguing tone. Then, as the multiple characters get introduced with the spotlight on each backstory one by one, slowly fitting into pieces of a puzzle - the pace unfortunately begins to ebb. And that would be one of the biggest drawbacks of the film because as it tries to fit in all the stories and characters, the narrative begins to get overstuffed. So before one can wholly invest in a character, the thread is left to move on to another. And that too at a languid pace, with a narrator (Anurag Basu) making an appearance to stitch it all together and ponder on morality and the tussle between what constitutes sins and virtues. The cinematic treatment, however, has some trademark Basu signatures - the hues of blues and reds, the play of light and shadow setting the visual tone (cinematography - Anurag Basu). There is a dollop of dark comedy, a helping of sweet romance and some varied characters inadvertently thrown in the middle of it all. The background score and soundtrack (Pritam), undoubtedly perk up the proceedings.

The ensemble cast deliver some credible performances - Pankaj Tripathi is reliably good and it's obvious he enjoyed playing the badass criminal to the hilt. Rajkummar Rao's Mithun fan avatar is a hoot and he brings an endearing touch to it without getting hammy. Abhishek Bachchan makes an impact as Bittu. Fatima Sana Shaikh as the part docile, part trigger happy Pinky, is a revelation. Sanya Malhotra and Aditya Roy Kapoor hold their own well with some cutesy moments in their romance. Rohit Saraf with minimal dialogues but an interesting track stands out. And Pearle Maney leaves quite an impression.

'Ludo' has some moments that sparkle, some that are edgy, quirky and stay with you, but it also has some indulgent ones and some that seem pointless and unconvincing. The screenplay (Anurag Basu) gets scattered and meanders mid-way but if one can ride over those bumps (with a runtime of two and a half hours that may seem like a tad much), the climax ties everything up rather neatly, with some quintessential badass quotient and surprises thrown in. Watch this one for the noteworthy performances and its interesting mix of morally ambiguous characters. Ultimately 'Ludo' tries to make a larger point about not judging anyone for the choices they make.

Laxmii is a 2020 Indian Bollywood comedy horror film written and directed by Raghava Lawrence in his Hindi directorial debut. Laxmii Movie Review :

He is a self-proclaimed ‘hard-core lover’ and there are very few things in life Asif wouldn’t do for his spouse of three years. It is this very reason that prompts him to pack his bags and rush off to Daman to patch things up between Rashmi and her family, and maybe procure a place in their hearts for him, too.“He runs granite and marbles business and is a senior member at the Jagoo Aavam committee; they are fighting the superstitious beliefs surrounding ghosts and spirits,” declares Rashmi – proudly – when quizzed about her husband’s profession. So when the neighbourhood kids refuse to play at the adjacent ground because an evil spirit dwells there, Asif, quite expectedly, brushes it off and pledges to play a full IPL game on that abandoned land.

Soil nailing, very dramatically, changes the Earth above and beneath – dark, ferocious clouds looming around at an alarming pace, while dried autumn leaves caress the faces. The witch sleeping underneath that piece of turf has been shaken awake, and now, she must follow the culprit home: Asif. Too dramatic? So is the plot of this film, read on. When the spirit does make her way into that home, it’s complete mayhem and madness. Who is it? What does she want? And why is Asif having a little escapade of his own with sarees and bangles? Questions aplenty, answers lie in ‘Laxmii’ – literally and figuratively.

‘Laxmii’ sets out to be a satire against age-old beliefs and biases – we get it! – but the insipidness of the narrative and whatever follows thereon, butchers the lessons it originally desires to impart.

Looking back, the reiterating catchphrase happens to be ‘Maine kuch nahin dekha… yahaan koi nahin hain’ and that’s the vibe we’re latching on to at the moment.
