Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Movie Review :

'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' calls out the hypocrisy around seemingly happy marriages right at the beginning, when Kajal (Bhumi Pednekar) tells her cousin, Dolly (Konkona Sen Sharma) that her husband Amit (Aamir Bashir) has been hitting on her. When Dolly insists Kajal may have misunderstood his friendly, protective behaviour, she spells it out for her cousin, "Amit ji humse sex karna chahte hain." But there are more things on Dolly's mind than to get worked up about this piece of information, like making plans to move into a plush new complex, where the couple's new flat is under construction. When money falls short for their installments, Dolly hustles - by either stealing from her office or selling her jewelry. Her day at work usually starts off by making three cups of tea - one for her boss, one for her colleague and one for herself.

The performances are overall topnotch. Konkona Sen Sharma as Mrs.Yadav or Dolly is superlative as her character moves through an entire arc in this film, exploring her relationship with her husband, her son Pappu and her mother. Bhumi Pednekar also dishes out a stellar act. Amol Parasher stands out as the sweet delivery boy, Osmaan. Vikrant Massey as Kajal's lover, Pradeep, is superb, as is Aamir Bashir as Dolly's disgruntled husband, Amit.

Ultimately, 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' brings out the different shades to womanhood through it's layered narrative and pushes one to be who they want to be. And damn it, if society has other dreams for you.

Atkan Chatkan Movie Review :

Talent is a great leveller and music transcends boundaries. Even as the insider-outsider debate rages on in the film industry, Atkan Chatkan drives home the point that nothing can stop you from realising your dream, if you have the will and the skill. You don’t need fancy shoes to run, just the intent to soar higher and faster. When you want something with all your heart, the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. Part reality, part fiction, the story is loosely inspired by the life of the legendary Shivamani aka Drums Sivamani, who has also composed the music.

In terms of direction and storytelling, Atkan Chatkan is predictable, formulaic and opts for an over-simplistic approach of expression. Guddu’s drunk and violent father, missing mother, abusive employers, upper class bullies, begging cartels, lost childhood — the works. Shiv Hare wants you to have a sympathetic gaze towards his protagonist’s life. It’s absolutely fine to want to evoke that sentiment as long as it all feels organic. If the efforts to achieve that are visible, it all feels a tad caricaturish and cliched.

If music makes your soul happy, Atkan Chatkan cannot be missed. It‘s a heartfelt ode to friendship and resounding belief in our dreams.

Choked Netflix Movie Review :

Right from the first frame, ‘Choked’ hooks you with its mood and milieu. Set in a middle-class housing society in Mumbai, replete with its narrow staircases, yellowed walls and peeling paint, we get an inside into the Pillai family and their close knit neighbors. While all that’s left of it today –- is Sushant strumming a few strings with all the time he has at hand and Sarita making a noise about all that’s come undone.

The performances are top-notch. Saiyami Kher shoulders the film confidently and pulls off a stellar performance. Roshan Mathew nails it as the unreliable but soft-hearted Sushant. Watch out for the scene where he brings Sarita her lunch to office and has a moving conversation with her before leaving. Amruta Shubhash and Rajshree Deshpande as well-meaning neighbors, liven up the scene. The background score (Karsh Kale), sound design (Gautam Nair) and cinematography (Sylvester Fonseca) set the mood brilliantly.

As ‘Choked’ opens its doors to a middle-class Maharashtrian set up, it also draws us close to their dreams and aspirations which have perhaps gotten choked by the drudgery of everyday life.

Chintu Ka Birthday Movie Review :

Vinay Pathak, Tillotama Shome touch hearts as doting parents who refuse to allow outside pain creep into their child’s life.

What does a child care about war. If it’s his birthday, he just wants to have his birthday cake. Like me, if you too celebrated your birthday in the ongoing lockdown, you can perhaps relate to Chintu’s dilemma a lot more. Of course, his situation is far more dangerous but sentiment, pretty much the same. This is my day and I don’t want anyone to ruin it for me. Following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, amidst American invasion of Iraq, an Indian family in dire circumstances wants to ensure their child’s happiness at all costs. How to keep smiling in the face of adversity, is the essence of this sweet little film with a big heart. Writer-directors Satyanshu Singh and Devanshu Singh tell a heartwarming story of resilience and compassion in times of tragedy. It’s all about savouring the little joys and making the most of what you have.

The Zee 5 original wins hearts in more ways than one and this is what makes it a winner among the bustling OTT scene. The story about a child’s birthday party is layered with details -- it talks about American soldiers stuck in Iraq for years during the war, it showcases how illegal immigration destroys lives and it wonders about inherent ‘goodness and badness’ of human beings.

The execution requires a certain urgency and unpredictability. Absence of those elements makes this film a decent attempt but nothing beyond that.

What Are the Odds Movie Review :

A girl named Vivek (yes, what are the odds?), who is also wont to screaming at the drop of a hat, manages to skip her Hindi scholarship exam. How? By stealing her hall ticket at the exam venue and then taking off. So, why did she just not turn up for the exam then, also a question posed to her by Ashwin (Karanvir Malhotra), the school head boy with whom she ends up spending her day. Because she wanted to register a protest and not conform to the preset notions of society. Yes, that. It comes across as even more pointless when you actually watch it.

Anyway, while stealing her hall ticket Vivek (Yashaswini Damaya) ends up stealing that of Ashwin’s as well and they inadvertently spend the rest of the day together.

A day where they run into a troupe of senior citizens performing on the streets in red track pants, meeting a man on a terrace who they think is about to commit suicide but he is actually doing ‘susu’ – which incidentally ends up watering a turnip garden, they are even chased in a forest by a man dressed as a tree and there is a talking goldfish, Bunty thrown into the mix. An artist also pops up with a few art installations and spouts about art in general. On the upside, both the lead pair Yashwashi and Karanvir pull in assured performances and Abhay Deol’s brief cameo is refreshing. And the film’s soundtrack is a pleasant. Other than that, this Netflix film doesn’t have much in store.

Mrs. Serial Killer Movie Review :

From its synopsis, Mrs. Serial Killer sounds like one hell of a crime thriller. But a few minutes into the film and you realise that it’s criminally nonsensical. Yes, there is crime but barely any thrill. Mrs. Serial Killer begins on an intriguing note with a pregnant Sona talking to her husband on a video call and teasing him about having an extra marital affair. Just then the film’s third key character Inspector Imran Shahid (Mohit Raina) barges into Sona’s house to arrest Dr. Mukherjee in a case of six missing pregnant girls. It sets the stage for a mysterious whodunit but this Netflix film never really becomes one despite a generous dose of blood and gore. There are a lot of factors responsible for this including its predictable plot and weak writing. Neither the characters nor their motives hold enough conviction to justify the build-up that is partly effective only because of the film’s chilling cinematography (Ravi K. Chandran and Kiran Deohans) and the small town setting

Director Shirish Kunder tries to infuse tension with a distinct background score. However, it doesn’t add much impact due to the film’s underwhelming narrative that is far too convenient and unrealistic. The film ends with a highly implausible climax but it leaves the door open for a sequel. And that’s the scariest part.

Bamfaad Movie Review :

Aditya Rawal makes a promising debut but Ranjan Chandel’s directorial debut is riddled with clichés of small-town love stories. In his directorial debut, Bamfaad, Ranjan Chandel manages to capture the old-world charm of Allahabad - not Prayagraj, but Ilahabad -- as the locals would say. It is the perfect setting for dramatic young love, but Aditya Rawal and Shalini Pandey’s romance is not quite the explosive and heady passion that it promises to be.

Nasir Jamal aka Naate (Aditya Rawal), the hot-headed and impulsive son of politically ambitious Shahid Jamal, falls in love at first sight with Neelam (Shalini Pandey). She is ‘bamfaad’ herself, but has a dark secret of her own, which ties her to local strongman Jigar Fareedi (Vijay Varma).

The inter-religious aspect of the relationship is unimportant in the scheme of things in Bamfaad; there is a one-off reference to ‘love jihad’ but it is quickly forgotten. Instead, the villain in this story is Jigar, who is determined to strip Nasir of his ego. But this face-off, too, lacks intensity. And while Nasir’s volatile behaviour is established right from the opening scene, when a major conflict arises, he puzzlingly hops on the first bus to Lucknow with Neelam to get away from it all.Aditya Rawal makes a promising debut and is a refreshing departure from the star kids with enviable physiques but zero acting chops. He delivers a restrained performance, with a convincing UP accent. Shalini Pandey is up to the mark as the feisty-yet-vulnerable Neelam but reminiscent of her Arjun Reddy act.Jatin Sarna is impressive as the treacherous friend, and while Vijay Varma stands out as the local strongman with political ambitions, the weak writing lets him down.

Bamfaad loses steam in the second half and has a been-there-done-that feel to it. However, it is buoyed by its performances, and makes for a decent watch during the lockdown.
